five sustainable summer tips for your consideration!
My sweet friend - and singer - Ilse asked me to write 5 eco tips for her, so that she could share them with her fanbase. In what follows, I am sharing the same with you…. because we have to learn that there are more sustainable ways to live.
If you need more guidance, then I am available for your corporate of family workshop called “Every week can be Earth week.” Contact me : info@pamelapeeters.com
1. SAVE WATER
Water is a finite resource, and we should try to use it mindfully.
If you don’t have a dual flush system, then you can put a brick in your toilet, so that you can reduce your water usage, one bathroom visit at a time. Also, when you brush your teeth, stop the water flow and only reopen when you are ready to rinse away your tooth paste. I have an additional tip to be taken into account during summer time while managing your garden: water your garden in the evening, so that the soil has ample time to absorb what you carefully poured onto the dirt, instead of allowing the sun to burn your flowers and plants and evaporate this liquid gold.
2. SAVE ENERGY
Our global society has to start learning how to embrace renewable energy sources as we need to reduce our oil addiction for so many different reasons ( destruction of ecosystems, climate change,… )
While we are not fully there yet, we can learn how to adopt more energy efficient practices so that we can lower our energy usage and save some money as well. How about bringing an energy saving power strip into your electrical reality, and turn off your air conditioner when you are not home ( or at least, decrease the need to make it feel like an ice chamber )
3. CHANGE YOUR FOOD HABITS
Becoming a vegetarian is probably one of the most environmentally friendly choices one can make.
Ok, we might not all turn vegetarian overnight, but try to compose a balanced meatless meal, once a week. It’s healthy and environmentally sound. You should also change your habit of eating processed food and turn to fresh produce instead. I only eat a mix of seasonal fruits in the morning and it makes me feel light and vibrant. You are what you eat, right, so keep track of what you eat and discover who you really are!
4. CONNECT WITH NATURE
Let’s re-establish our relationship with nature, as we can only start loving - and preserving - what we know.
Did you know that “green” is the color that relaxes us the most? Therefore, in a world where we are living a very “techno” lifestyle, it is important to allow ourselves to breathe in the good stuff and exhale. What better than to plan a hike in the woods and recharge our batteries. Another option is to bring nature indoors and grow your own herbal garden. It’s fun to create your own mix of mint tea, basil, rosemary, parsley and chives. They look good too and you can just cut away your daily bouquet of mixed herbs and watch them grow back. If you have bigger ambitions, then maybe a green rooftop is your next big project.
5. REDUCE PACKAGING
When you shop, take a pause and notice how much plastic is out there. Do you really need all that stuff, as at the end of the day, less is more!
When I was still at school, I would bring my lunchbox to school, no plastic bags for me. The same happened to my drink container, which I refilled every day. Why change that habit while you are on the job?
